EXPERIENCE
Schott Schoeffel has over 24 years experience as a health care provider, real estate and general business transaction lawyer. Mr. Schoeffel was previously a member of the Business Practice Group of Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue in its Irvine and Los Angeles offices for over 11 years. Most recently he served as Vice President and Assistant General Counsel for Tenet Healthcare Corporation in its Santa Ana, California regional office.
In the health care area, Mr. Schoeffel has extensive experience in all aspects of managed care and indemnity insurance, including the formation of strategic provider networks, regulatory compliance, licensing, legislative affairs, and contract negotiation and enforcement. His managed care practice included representation of physicians, hospitals, ancillary service providers, as well as HMOs and other health insurers. Mr. Schoeffel also has substantial experience in advising clients on legal issues related to the many different aspects of hospital operations, including counseling on routine and strategic business transactions, contract review and negotiation, compliance with the anti-Kickback Law, the Stark Law, antitrust laws, medical staff issues, and government reinbursement. He has also represented a wide variety of clients, including both non-profit and for-profit hospitals and academic medical centers, in the purchase and sale of health care entities, formation of health care joint ventures, and contracting with governmental entities. He is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and the California Society of Health Care Attorneys.
In the real estate area, Mr. Schoeffel has extensive experience in all areas of real estate practice, including purchase and sale transactions, land use, subdivision and development, environmental issues, financing and leasing, construction, and property management. The scope of his practice includes commercial, residential, retail and industrial projects. His clients have included national development and asset management companies, governmental entities, including a state transportation agency and university system, as well as regional and local planners, developers and management companies. He has served as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Dana Point, California, for the past eight years, and has served as Chairman of that body for three years.
EDUCATION
Mr. Schoeffel graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Biological Sciences in 1976. He received his J.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall) in 1980, where he was a member of Ecology Law Quarterly. He has been a member of the State Bar of California since December, 1980.
